As of mid-2022, 36 states allowed cannabis use for medical purposes, including treatment for chronic pain. Investigators used a national opinion research center to explore the nature of cannabis use for chronic pain with a cross-sectional study of 54,000 adults who lived in those states, of whom 1700 were identified as having chronic pain.
About one third of respondents reported ever using cannabis for their chronic pain, and one quarter reported use in the prior 30 days. Among those who reported cannabis use, the following findings were noted:
95% also used other pharmacologic treatments for pain.
71% also used nonpharmacologic treatments.
More than half reported that cannabis use led to less use of other analgesics, both opioid and nonopioid.…
