In June 2021, an outbreak of tuberculosis in 18 states was reportedly linked to patients receiving bone graft material from a single deceased donor (Lancet Infect Dis 2022; 22:1617). Because of concern about possible other routes of transmission, the CDC initiated a contact investigation of 5985 healthcare personnel (HCP) at 46 facilities; all had had contact with the contaminated bone graft material or the patients.
Of 4884 HCP who were screened for latent or active tuberculosis, 73 (1.5%) were infected and had latent disease. The highest rates were seen among those in sterile processing departments (2.3%); other exposures occurred in the operating room (1.0%), post-anesthesia care unit (1.5%), and inpatient or long-term care units (1.5%). …
