The goal of preprocedural fasting is to prevent or lower risk for pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents, which is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. After conducting a recent review of the literature, the ASA has updated its 2017 practice guideline on preoperative fasting (Anesthesiology 2017; 126:376) to include topics not addressed previously, including ingestion of carbohydrate-containing clear liquids with or without protein, chewing gum, and pediatric fasting duration.
