Because inguinal hernia surgery is so common, primary care clinicians should keep abreast of pros and cons of the various operative approaches. In this retrospective study, researchers used a U.S. Veterans Affairs quality improvement database to compare complication rates for open repair under general anesthesia, open repair under local anesthesia, and laparoscopic repair (which requires general anesthesia).
