The spectrum of post-COVID-19 sequelae still is being defined. How common are gastrointestinal (GI) disorders?
Italian researchers prospectively followed 883 hospitalized adults (age range, 18–85) from 36 hospitals in Europe and Asia between May and October 2020. No patient had preexisting GI symptoms or prior GI surgery. At enrollment, GI symptoms, particularly nausea and diarrhea, were significantly more common among patients with COVID-19 than among others (60% vs. 40%). One month later, the COVID-19 group continued to report more nausea and acid reflux.
