Because Candida auris (C. auris) can cause outbreaks and is often resistant to antifungal agents, CDC considers this organism a serious global health threat. Researchers now report trends in surveillance data from 2016 through 2021 for clinical cases (C. auris isolated as part of routine care) as well as screening cases (skin swabs from individuals thought to be at excess risk for colonization).
Of 3270 clinical cases, 53 were reported in 2016 and 1471 in 2021. A total of 7413 screening cases were reported, over half of which occurred in 2021.
