Recommended Treatments for Severe Mpox

Pending controlled drug trials, several agents have been recommended for mitigating the severe manifestations of monkeypox infection.

Background and Objectives

The principal target of the 2022 mpox (monkeypox) outbreak consisted of those who are gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. While most patients had self-limited, localized lesions, some (including children and others with immunocompromise) experienced severe complications involving multiple systems. In the absence of controlled studies of drugs effective against severe mpox disease, therapeutic medical countermeasures (MCM) have been recommended by the CDC, primarily involving antiviral and immune-therapeutic agents (none viricidal) stored by the government for possible use against diseases such as smallpox.
