Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) was first described early in the COVID-19 pandemic (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Aug 2020 and JAMA 2020 Jun 8; [e-pub]) and is associated with significant morbidity and, rarely, mortality. As of the end of February 2023, almost 1000 MIS-C cases and 76 deaths have been reported and case reports have mirrored the incidence of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic.
Researchers in the U.S. and Canada examined data from the International Kawasaki Disease Registry to identify children hospitalized from April 2020 through June 2022 who met CDC criteria for MIS-C.
