A higher score on the validated “Mediterranean Lifestyle Index,” including adherence to a Mediterranean diet plus lifestyle practices such as sufficient rest, regular physical activity, and social interaction, has been associated with lower cardiovascular (CV) risk in people with no previous CV disease. In the CORDIOPREV study, patients with histories of coronary artery disease who were randomized to a Mediterranean diet had significantly fewer adverse CV events during 7 years of follow-up than did those randomized to a reduced-fat diet (NEJM JW Gen Med Jun 15 2022 and Lancet 2022; 399:1876).
