Almost 30% of individuals experience persisting symptoms (“post–COVID-19 condition”) after acute COVID-19 infection, but the course of such sequelae has been insufficiently studied. Using standardized assessments, Swiss researchers examined the natural symptomatic course in 1106 unvaccinated adults (51% female) with a first episode of wildtype (Wuhan-Hu-1) SARS-CoV-2 infection between August 2020 and January 2021.
During the acute phase, 86% of participants were symptomatic and 4% were admitted to hospital. Most showed continuous recovery thereafter: 55% regained their normal health status within 1 month, and another 18% recovered completely after 3 months.
