Chronic idiopathic constipation substantially impairs quality of life. Nonpharmacologic interventions (i.e., hydration, dietary fiber, exercise) are initial steps in therapy but often are unsuccessful in relieving constipation. This guideline addresses pharmacologic interventions for chronic idiopathic constipation; it does not address constipation related to opioid use or other causes.
