People who survive hospitalization for COVID-19, influenza, and sepsis experience excess risks for subsequent adverse cardiovascular, neurological, and other outcomes. To examine how posthospitalization risks vary across these three conditions, researchers conducted a population-based cohort study that involved 379,000 adult patients (median age, 75) in Ontario, Canada. One-year risks for various outcomes after hospitalization for COVID-19 were compared with risks for patients hospitalized for influenza before the pandemic and patients hospitalized for sepsis before or during the pandemic. Comparisons were adjusted for baseline differences among these groups.
