Women who have experienced peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) may desire future pregnancies, but data on maternal outcomes after subsequent pregnancies are lacking.
In a single-center retrospective review, investigators examined long-term adverse maternal outcomes among 45 patients with PPCM who had a subsequent pregnancy (mean age, 27 years; 80% African American; 76% uninsured or receiving Medicaid). PPCM had been diagnosed postpartum in 93% (at 6 weeks postpartum on average). Thirty patients had recovery of their left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) to ≥50% after the index pregnancy (when PPCM was diagnosed), while 15 continued to have LVEF <50%.
