Summer is here, and millions of swimming pools are attracting swimmers. CDC now describes an outbreak in early 2023 of symptomatic intestinal Cryptosporidium parvum infection among 19 of 50 men and women collegiate swimmers upon returning to Massachusetts from practice in Puerto Rico.
Diarrhea began 3 days after their return, and one student reported receiving positive ova and parasite tests for Cryptosporidium on days 5 and 6. Symptomatic swimmers subsequently competed in 2 other meets in New York and Rhode Island. CDC identified the organism as C. parvum, and Public Health authorities in these two states were notified so as to identify secondary cases.
