Secondary tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is common in heart failure (HF), both with preserved and reduced left ventricular function. However, the prognostic consequences of TR in the acute HF setting are debated.
In a retrospective cohort study, Italian investigators examined the association between echocardiographically determined TR and 1-year all cause-mortality in 1176 patients hospitalized with acute HF. Moderate or severe TR was present in 352 patients (30%), who were older and had higher rates of comorbidities (e.g., chronic kidney disease, atrial fibrillation) compared with patients with trace or mild TR.
