In this prospective study, researchers determined whether odor identification and global cognition affected dementia risk in a biracial community-dwelling cohort of older adults. Intact olfaction was defined as scores of 9 through 12 on the Brief Smell Identification Test (BSIT) and impaired olfaction as scores of 0 through 8. Cognition was considered intact with scores of 78 through 100 on the Teng Modified Mini-Mental Status Examination (3MS) and impaired with scores of 1 through 77. Dementia outcomes were based on adjudicated hospital records or prescription of antidementia medication. APOE ℇ4 genotype was a variable of interest.
