Social connection may affect brain heath. In this study, researchers analyzed social contact and brain volumes in 8896 dementia-free community-dwelling Japanese adults ages 65 years or older (57% female; mean age, 73 years). Participants answered a questionnaire on frequency of contact with relatives or friends who do not live with them, categorized as every day, several times a week, several times a month, and seldom. The investigators calculated total brain volume (TBV), regional brain volume, and white-matter lesion volume (WMLV) as a percentage of intracranial volume (ICV).
