Arboviral Disease Surveillance in the U.S.

In 2021, West Nile virus remained the most common cause of reportable arboviral illness, with possible rising likelihood of being neuroinvasive.

Human disease caused by arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) in the U.S. is reportable to the CDC via the ArboNET surveillance system. In all, 3035 arboviral disease cases were reported in 2021, 70% of which were neuroinvasive.

West Nile Virus

Among 2911 cases (median age, 65; 60% male; 72% hospitalized, 8% mortality) the largest number (1140) was reported in Arizona. Overall, 69% of cases were neuroinvasive (higher than the mean 63% reported in 2010–2020).

LaCrosse Virus

Reported primarily in Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Of 40 cases (median age, 6 years; all hospitalized, no deaths), 98% were neuroinvasive.
