Human disease caused by arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) in the U.S. is reportable to the CDC via the ArboNET surveillance system. In all, 3035 arboviral disease cases were reported in 2021, 70% of which were neuroinvasive.
West Nile Virus
Among 2911 cases (median age, 65; 60% male; 72% hospitalized, 8% mortality) the largest number (1140) was reported in Arizona. Overall, 69% of cases were neuroinvasive (higher than the mean 63% reported in 2010–2020).
LaCrosse Virus
Reported primarily in Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Of 40 cases (median age, 6 years; all hospitalized, no deaths), 98% were neuroinvasive.
