Vaccination of women during pregnancy protects them as well as their newborns through transplacental antibody transfer and by reducing risk for postpartum neonatal exposure to maternal illness. How well does SARS-CoV-2 vaccination of pregnant women protect newborns from COVID-19–related hospitalization? U.S. investigators reviewed data from 20 states during Omicron predominance. Cases comprised infants aged <6 months hospitalized for COVID-19; controls were hospitalized with similar illnesses but were test-negative for COVID-19. Exposed women were defined as receiving their second or third dose of COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy (compared with unvaccinated women).
In all, 377 newborns with COVID-19 and 339 matched controls were identified.…
