Nosocomial infections are common in nursing homes, and multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) invariably are part of the mix. California researchers evaluated the effectiveness of treating nursing home residents with topical antiseptics that are effective for limiting MDRO carriage and infection in other settings.
During an 18-month period in 2017 and 2018, nursing personnel in 14 California nursing homes were instructed to bathe their patients (≈14,000 individuals in total) with chlorhexidine solution rather than soap and periodically to apply a 10% povidone-iodine solution to the nares.
