Feasibility and Performance of Prehospital EEG for Detecting LVO Stroke

A potential signal for triaging large-vessel occlusion stroke was suggested, but nearly one third of recordings were not of sufficient quality to analyze.

Because endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for large-vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke requires specialized infrastructure and personnel that are not available at all centers, accurate identification of LVO stroke in the prehospital setting could be useful. Prehospital electroencephalography (EEG) is a potential triage tool for this purpose, but data on the feasibility and accuracy of this approach have been limited. In the partially industry-funded ELECTRA-STROKE study, prehospital EEG recordings from adults with suspected stroke and symptom onset or last-seen-well time within 24 hours were captured by paramedics in the field using a dry electrode cap with 8 electrodes.
