Sponsoring Organization: CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is the most common bacterial cause of community-acquired pneumonia in adults. As vaccination initially reduced the prevalence of some pneumococcal strains, others replaced them, necessitating newer polyvalent vaccines. Currently, three anti-pneumococcal vaccines targeting different pneumococcal serotypes are recommended for use in adults with and without immunocompromising conditions. Two (PCV15, and PCV20) are pneumococcal conjugate vaccines and one (PPSV23) contains several pneumococcal polysaccharides.
