Vaping nicotine (e-cigarettes) has become more common among young adults. In this study, researchers analyzed nationally representative survey data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and determined trends in vaping and smoking among six waves of young adults (age range, 18–24; 8200 to 11,400 participants per wave) during 2013 to 2021.
Between wave 1 (2013–2014) and wave 6 (2021), the following changes in prevalence were reported:
Ever smoking decreased from 53% to 35%.
Ever vaping increased from 32% to 53%.
Current smoking decreased from 20% to 6%.
Current vaping increased from 4% to 15%.
