A complete spinal cord injury (SCI) usually results in severe motor deficit that can partially be recovered. Approximately 30% of patients with complete SCI show some recovery after inpatient rehabilitation. Currently, no biomarker can predict which patients will partially recover motor function. Spasticity has been observed before motor recovery in such patients. The objective of this study was to see whether spasticity — an indication of preserved descending motor pathways — could serve as a clinical marker to predict motor recovery.
