Some people have persistent symptoms for many months after resolution of acute COVID-19 — a syndrome called “long COVID.” Although such patients often have normal standard laboratory tests, many have underlying abnormalities of the central and autonomic nervous system, immune system, metabolism, gut microbiome, and vascular system (NEJM JW Gen Med Jul 1 2023).
In a study from Switzerland and New York, researchers examined 6500 proteins in repeated blood samples drawn for as long as 12 months from patients with long COVID, patients with full recovery from COVID-19, and healthy controls.
