Potential adverse cardiovascular (CV) effects of medications for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are an ongoing concern, especially in adults. These drugs have been associated (on average) with small increases in heart rate and blood pressure, but evidence for other adverse CV effects is unclear. In this case-control study, Swedish researchers compared ≈10,000 patients with ADHD and with “any CV disease” (which included hypertension) and ≈50,000 age- and sex-matched controls with ADHD but without CV disease. Age range was 6 to 64 (mean, 35); two thirds of patients were older than 25.
