In preparation for clinical trials, the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Functional Outcome Measure (CMT-FOM) was developed to assess physical performance in adults with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), the most common type of hereditary neuropathy, characterized by slowly progressive distal weakness and sensory loss. The original CMT-FOM measured 13 items of upper- and lower-extremity strength, balance, and mobility using items such as grip strength, single-leg stance with eyes closed, and 6-minute walk test. In this examination of the reliability and validity of the CMT-FOM, 214 ambulatory adults (58% female) 18 to 75 years of age (mean, 45 years) with CMT1A completed the CMT-FOM.
