Compared with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infection, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infection has been associated with worse clinical outcomes. Ceftobiprole is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin with activity against MRSA; this agent, which has been available for several years in Europe and Canada, also has extended Gram-negative activity (including against Pseudomonas aeruginosa).
On April 3, 2024, the FDA approved ceftobiprole medocaril (Zevtera) for the treatment of adults with:
S. aureus bacteremia (SAB), including right-sided infective endocarditis
Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI)
Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP; also approved for pediatric patients aged 3 months to <18 years)
