Can a Meningococcal Vaccine Prevent Neisseria gonorrhoeae Infection?

Mathematical modeling suggests a single or primary booster of 4CMenB vaccine would be effective and cost-effective in preventing gonorrhea among MSM.

Observational studies have indicated that two doses of 4CMenB meningitis B vaccine afford 40% protection against Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection. To test this further, Nikitin et al. developed a mathematical transmission model of gonorrhea in men who have sex with men (MSM). Two vaccination strategies were targeted:

4CMenB offered to all individuals with diagnoses of gonorrhea (Vaccination on Diagnosis [VoD])
4CMenB offered to those deemed at risk based on sexual activity [Vaccination According to Risk [VaR])

The effect of different patterns of vaccine sentiment were examined by considering population cohorts to be “All willing” or “Some unwilling.”
