Ultraprocessed foods — industrial products made of food-derived substances with little or no intact whole food — make up more than half of the average diet in the U.S. and might be associated with adverse health outcomes (NEJM JW Gen Med Jul 15 2019 and BMJ 2019; 365:l1451; NEJM JW Gen Med 2022 Sep 22; [e-pub] and BMJ 2022; 378:e070688). Investigators analyzed data from two long-term, prospective studies in which 110,000 U.S. health professionals completed detailed dietary surveys every 4 years starting in the 1980s.
