Oral antiplatelet therapy has been the mainstay of treatment for acute ischemic stroke. Recent trials have evaluated the use of tirofiban, an intravenous glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitor with resultant antiplatelet activity, beyond its current FDA-approved indication for acute coronary disease, to include acute ischemic stroke. In the open-label, blinded-endpoint TREND trial, 425 patients with acute noncardioembolic stroke presenting to 10 centers in China within 24 hours of symptom onset were randomized to receive either intravenous tirofiban or oral aspirin alone for 72 hours; both groups received aspirin monotherapy.
