Severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection was originally thought to occur primarily in young children, in whom it caused laryngotracheal bronchitis known as croup. Current evidence indicates that RSV causes potentially lethal lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) in adults, especially those aged ≥60. Three FDA-approved RSV vaccines are now available: two protein subunit vaccines (GSK's Arexvy and Pfizer's Abrysvo) and one mRNA vaccine (Moderna's mResvia). The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that a single dose of any of these vaccines be administered to any adult aged ≥75 and to those aged 60 to 74 at excess risk for severe RSV disease.
