Prior studies of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) for functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) yielded conflicting results, compared with guideline-directed medical therapy alone: TEER showed no advantage in MITRA-FR (NEJM JW Cardiol Aug 27 2018 and N Engl J Med 2018; 379:2297) but a reduction in heart failure (HF) or death in COAPT (NEJM JW Cardiol Mar 8 2021 and J Am Coll Cardiol 2021; 77:1029). Two manufacturer-funded randomized trials, the multinational RESHAPE-HF2 (NCT02444338 and the MATTERHORN (NCT02371512) from Germany, offer more insight.
