The effect of perioperative aspirin monotherapy on ischemic and bleeding events in patients with coronary drug-eluting stents (DES) is not known. In the multinational, open-label ASSURE DES trial, 926 patients who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention with DES placement >1 year prior and were scheduled for low-to-intermediate risk elective, noncardiac surgery were randomized to either continue/switch to aspirin monotherapy (100 mg daily) throughout the perioperative period or stop all antiplatelet agents 5 days before surgery and restart them within 48 hours after surgery.
