Because cross-sectional studies have suggested that seizures may lead to decreased cognitive function, researchers conducted this large, multicenter, longitudinal study to assess whether seizures were associated with conversion from normal cognition to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia and from MCI to dementia among participants with data from at least two follow-up visits collected by the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center. Active seizures were defined as recurrent seizures or receipt of seizure treatment within 1 year of study enrollment.
