Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a life-threatening condition caused by infection with the JC polyomavirus (JCV) in gray and white matter cells of the brain. JCV infection usually occurs in childhood, typically without symptoms; antibodies against the virus remain detectable in 50% to 65% of adults. PML can develop in the setting of immunosuppressive treatments or conditions. Treatment of PML with directly isolated allogeneic virus-specific (DIAVIS) T cells is a potential option.
