The American Academy of Pediatrics 2023 clinical practice guidelines for managing obesity focuses on children ≥2 years old (NEJM JW Gen Med Mar 1 2023 and Pediatrics 2023; 151:e2022060640), but what if healthy weight behaviors were encouraged starting as soon as birth? In this multicenter U.S. randomized trial involving 900 newborns, health behavior counseling for parents of newborns (provided in person by pediatric primary care clinicians at 8 well-child visits during 2 years) was compared with an intervention that added interactive text messaging and a web-based dashboard to the standard in-office counseling.
