The rVSV-ZEBOV-GP Vaccine: A Tool in the Ebola Outbreak Management Kit

During the 2018–2020 Ebola outbreak, the effectiveness of ring vaccination with rVSV-ZEBOV-GP (plus other control measures) supported results of a prior randomized trial.

In a cluster-randomized study during the West African Ebola outbreak of 2014–2016, the efficacy of live replicating rVSV-ZEBOV-GP (recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus–Zaire Ebola virus glycoprotein) vaccine was 100%. To mitigate the 2018–2020 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, rVSV-ZEBOV-GP ring vaccination and infection control measures were applied. Now, investigators assessed vaccine safety as well as incidence of Ebola virus disease (EVD) during post-vaccination days 0–9 (when the vaccine was not expected to have an effect), days 10–29, and thereafter.
