Cryptococcosis is increasingly recognized in those without HIV and entails infection with either Cryptococcus neoformans or C. gattii. In 2023, a consortium of 46 hospitals in Australia and New Zealand reported outcomes among 426 patients without HIV infection, representing 90% of all cases. That study found that almost 40% of patients had no documented immunocompromising condition, higher serum cryptococcal antigen titers were associated with CNS involvement, 1-year all-cause mortality was 21%, and C. gattii comprised 26% of culture-positive cases.
