The DanGer Shock trial established that microaxial flow pump (mAFP) use decreases all-cause mortality in certain patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and cardiogenic shock (CS; NEJM JW Cardiol Apr 8 2024 and N Engl J Med 2024; 390:1382). In an exploratory secondary analysis, the investigators examined whether this mortality benefit extends to older patients.
In the open-label trial, 355 adults with STEMI and CS (defined as hypotension, an elevated lactate, and left ventricular ejection fraction <45%) were randomized to mAFP placement plus standard care (including a revascularization attempt on all participants) or standard care alone.
