Vasculitic neuropathy is classically described as having acute-to-subacute onset with multiple mononeuropathies. To elucidate clinical differences based on size of vessel involvement, investigators reviewed charts from all patients >10 years old with a pathologic diagnosis of nerve vasculitis at the Mayo Clinic. Vessel wall inflammation and either wall damage or destruction had to be present on nerve biopsy.
Of 278 patients evaluated over 19 years, 125 were diagnosed with large-arteriole vasculitis (affected vessels ≥75 µm) and 153 with nerve microvasculitis (<75 µm).
