Up to 40% of solid-organ transplant recipients (SOTR) will develop posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM). While medications such as calcineurin inhibitors and corticosteroids contribute to this risk, viral infections such as cytomegalovirus have been associated with PTDM. Is COVID-19 also a risk factor for PTDM? To find out, investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult SOTRs without diabetes who did or did not have a posttransplant diagnosis of COVID-19.
Among SOTRs with a COVID-19 diagnosis within 180 days of transplant, 17% developed PTDM within 2 years. By contrast, PTDM occurred in 13% of matched SOTRs without COVID-19 (hazard ratio for PTDM, 1.37). Additional risk factors for PTDM were lung transplantation, older age,…
