Anabolic steroid (AS) use is associated with excess risk for infertility, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, and risk-taking behaviors. In particular, injuries and poisonings among AS users are concerning. In this Danish cohort study, researchers identified 1200 male AS users who had been banned from fitness centers under a national antidoping program and 60,000 male recreational athletes who did not use AS. Mean age was 27 in both groups.
During 1 year of follow-up, injury rates were 22% in AS users and 14% in nonusers (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.46).
