The CDC last issued guidelines for nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis (nPEP) in 2016. Nonoccupational exposures range from sexual (including assaults) to needle-sharing during injection drug use, and are to be distinguished from occupational needle-stick injuries (which mostly involve healthcare professionals and have separate guidelines). Now, the CDC has updated its nPEP guidelines to include newer antiretroviral regimens and a revised testing schedule.
nPEP is recommended for persons who have sexual or needle-sharing exposure to a source with HIV who does not have sustained HIV suppression or whose suppression status is unknown.
