At the population level, persons who use preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are clearly protected from new HIV infection. However, benefits for specific at-risk groups are less well understood. Investigators analyzed U.S. state-level data on PrEP use, HIV suppression rates, and new HIV infections from 2012 through 2022. Mean PrEP coverage and changes in HIV diagnosis were calculated.
Key results:
Over the 10-year study period, mean PrEP coverage rose from <1% to 26% while rates of HIV diagnosis fell from 13.0 to 10.6 cases per 100,000.
Areas with higher PrEP coverage, such as New York State, showed significantly fewer new HIV infections.
