Background

During the past decade, studies have shown that indiscriminate platelet transfusions are not benign and can worsen outcomes. This observation has precipitated a paradigm shift toward a restrictive approach to platelet transfusions. The AABB and ICTMG commissioned a panel to summarize the evidence on lower platelet transfusion thresholds and formulate recommendations that balance risks and benefits more effectively.
