Whether artificial intelligence (AI) can automate the interpretation of echocardiograms is of great interest. Using multitask deep learning, researchers trained an AI-based system, PanEcho, on 1.2 million videos from >24,000 patients undergoing echocardiography at a single academic center. The model was internally validated on echocardiograms from a different time period at the same health system and in four external datasets, including some with point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) images.
Compared with the interpreting physician's report, PanEcho:
Performed 18 diagnostic classification tasks with good accuracy
Detected moderate or severe left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and severe aortic stenosis with high accuracy
