In prelicensing studies, the adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) was shown to be highly effective in preventing both herpes zoster (HZ) and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Because longer-term data have been lacking, investigators at Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) evaluated vaccine effectiveness (VE) of RZV in patients aged ≥50 years from mid-2018 through late 2022.
Among almost 103,000 persons who received two doses of RZV (the second dose 4 weeks to 6 months after the first), VE for preventing HZ was 74% compared to a matched unvaccinated cohort.
