Patients with complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia are typically treated with a 4- to 8-week course of outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), but streamlined therapy with shorter courses is of great interest.
In this study, 200 hospitalized adults (mean age, 56) who cleared their S. aureus bacteremia after 3 to 10 days of initial standard antibiotic therapy were randomized to receive standard OPAT for 4 to 8 weeks or two doses of dalbavancin 1500 mg (on days 1 and 8). Soft-tissue infection, nonvertebral osteomyelitis, and septic arthritis accounted for 70% of cases. Right-sided infective endocarditis (IE) and vertebral osteomyelitis accounted for <10%; left-sided IE was excluded.
