First described in 2007, single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is a simplified bariatric surgical technique that has a substantial theoretical advantage over traditional Roux-en-Y bypass (RYGB): one anastomosis instead of two. Now, for the first time, researchers in France compared these procedures head-to-head in a randomized trial that involved 380 patients with obesity.
Patients' mean body-mass index was 46 kg/m2, and they had either no previous bariatric surgery or suboptimal weight loss after sleeve gastrectomy. At 2 years, key outcomes were as follows:
The SADI-S group had significantly greater weight loss than the RYGB group as defined by a formula based on ideal body weight.
